Test Transmission Information 23/10/2014

Here is a short story.

This Autumn 2014 season of radio broadcasts are produced by 2 two test transmission engineers only. Fewer humans. At the Resonance 104.4fm studio where we conduct our tests there are 2 studios. Studio 1 is downstairs and has space for multiple engineers to move around testing things and manipulating the broadcast. Studio 2 is upstairs. It's a little room. The two are connected.

When we have been 3 or more engineers, we conducted occasional tests between the two studios. But rarely have we focused all tests within an entire broadcast on tiny little Studio 2 and its surrounding office space. Until 2 weeks ago.

In the last two weeks we have  gathering ideas and detecting phenomena unique to Studio 2 and environs, which we now want test via broadcast. These tests will be brought to you in two phases. Phase one, this week, we will be constructing & manipulating signals, and recording phenomena. Phase two, probably next week, we will present the recordings made during phase one.

Please be aware we will be broadcasting sounds within a wide dynamnic range.

Live Music & Sound:

Cindytalk

Cindytalk is the life-long passion of Scottish singer/musician Gordon Sharp. A 37 year journey into the heart of noise-poetry. This work has often been a rigorous study in how we relate to the world we live in and also how we go about negotiating constant change without fear or subservience to shifting trends and expectations.

A dark and fractured first album "Camouflage Heart" was released in 1984 to much critical acclaim. The same year Sharp was one of three featured singers on 4AD supergroup, This Mortal Coil's debut album "It'll End in Tears". In 2013 Editions Mego released Cindytalk's "A Life Is Everywhere", an album of searing intensity and heartbreak - a shattering exposition of a displaced, dislocated life that somehow attempts to put sound to the Deleuzian concept of "the plane of immanence".

Many twists and turns have brought Cindytalk, in 2014, to a new, beautifully-wonky music family which features sound engineer David Ros, sound artist Melanie Clifford, performance percussionist Tim Goldie and Glasgow-based improv duo Lucy Duncombe & Kenneth Wilson. Mixing up all of those abstracted elements with a simple, beautifully-burning sky of broken melody…

http://www.cindytalk.com

Howlround

Howlround is the duo of Robin Warren (aka Robin The Fog) and Chris Weaver (BASCA British Composer Award Winner 2013), whose collective work is the re-examination of tape as creative medium for electronic music, in both live performance and composition.

First coming to prominence with hugely-acclaimed 2012 LP, The Ghosts of Bush, Howlround have now expanded to a sextet (four machines, two people) and create recordings and performances entirely by manipulating natural acoustic sounds on vintage reel-to-reel tape machines, with additional reverb or electronic effects strictly forbidden.

A Howlround live event is always a spectacle, due to the distinctive nature of their performances, in which haunting and uncanny soundscapes are created from loops of quarter-inch tape stretched and balanced precariously around the venue, while they try desperately to prevent the loops from snarling, snapping or becoming entangled – part sound design, part chaotic performance art.

Melanie Clifford, Howard Jacques & Nick Wilsdon are the sound artist-makers of Resonance 104.4fm's infamous Bermuda Triangle Test Transmission Broadcasts, every Thursday 11pm – midnight, testing sounds and ideas within and without the broadcast studio. Howard Jacques' Bermuda Triangle has been a regular feature in various guises on Resonance104.4fm since 2002, its initial incarnation having explored the uncategorisable in the Jacques Bros' These Records shop.

Each live performance is event-specific, and may involve self-made devices, field recordings & found percussion. Tonight the enginneers will be ubiquitous.

Jaye Ward

Jaye promises spiky odd funks and angular dancers. She has been operating on the outer edges of the disco for so long now, noise becomes funk, electronics are folk and Afro could be Detroit techno. So she tends to play everything. Genres blur, feet move and hearts sing.

Live Music / Sound / Vision
Eminent artist and musician, Bruce Gilbert is one of the founding members of influential art-punk band Wire and a pioneer of experimental noise. With a background in the British avant-garde music underground of the late '60s, Gilbert now works in a range of visual & sonic media, creating art and sound installations, pieces of performance art, recordings and commissions for contemporary dance productions and film. His collaborations with fellow luminaries include Graham Lewis, Iain Sinclair, Pan Sonic, A.C.Marias, PossStenger, Russell Mills, Paul Kendall & Robert Hampson & Beaconsfield Artworks.

For tonight's benefit, Gilbert is making a rare & unique solo performance, not to be missed.

Bermuda Triangle Test Engineers
Melanie Clifford, Howard Jacques & Nick Wilsdon are the sound artist-makers of Resonance 104.4fm's infamous Bermuda Triangle Test Transmission Broadcasts, every Thursday 11pm – midnight, testing sounds and ideas within and without the broadcast studio. Howard Jacques' Bermuda Triangle has been a regular feature in various guises on Resonance104.4fm since 2002, its initial incarnation having explored the uncategorisable in Jacques' These Records.

Each live performance is event-specific, and may involve self-made devices, field recordings & found percussion. Tonight the enginneers will begin this Lovely Audio Visual Extravaganza by conducting screen tests.

Greta Pistaceci
Multi-disciplinary artist, improvisor and exquisite thereminist Greta Pistaceci performs extensively as a solo and collaborative artist / musician: at times as her ultra-lo-fi DIY music alter-ego, Modersohn-Becker, at others as a member of duo Earth Creature with Smike Bardwell, and as part of expanding collective The A Band.

James Alec Hardy
Formerly notorious as James III and the Puritan/Courtesan, James Alec Hardy presents the debut installation and performance of Ziggurat 00120140215.

“The motif is an instantiation of a schematic diagram involving a feedback loop of video processors arranged in a pyramid. The video-out signal at each video node is directed to an amplifier stacked as totem alongside and the audio is fed back into the system, stimulating the video."

Chips For The Poor
Double Ghost Karaoke Rant Blast, Resonance 104.4fm favourites Chips for the Poor must be seen live to be believed...

Moving / Projected Image

Steven Ball
Artist Steven Ball works in audio-visual media, exploring material processes and spatial representation in local and global, social, political spheres through exhibition, online and in live performance. He is a Research Fellow at Central Saint Martins, a member of the legendary post-punk DIY group Storm Bugs, and also occasionally writes and curates.

Tonight is the screening premiere of his new work Boundary Cyclone Transaction (2013).

"Lists remind us that no matter how fluidly a system may operate, its members nevertheless remain utterly isolated, mutual aliens. Ontographical cataloging hones a virtue: the abandonment of anthropocentric narrative coherence in favor of worldly detail."
- Ian Bogost, Alien Phenomenology

Boundary Cyclone Transaction takes Ian Bogost's characterisation of the ontographic list and uses it as a process by which to auto-construct a picture of a non-human, which is perhaps to say alien, world, or at least one such as can be constructed using material found on or through the internet.

Melanie Clifford
Melanie Clifford works in translation between moving image, sound, drawing, broadcast, material and site. Her work includes constructing visual scores for variable sound interpretation, soliciting sensitivity to detail, to minor fluctuations and structural disintegrity. She currently has an Artist's residency at the Acme Fire Station in East London, and co-produces the weekly Bermuda Triangle Test Transmission Broadcasts for Resonance 104.4fm.

Tonight she will be screening moving image edited from Super 8, mobile phone video and film photography. And playing along with her co-engineers.

Helen Frosi
Artist, writer and co-founder of SoundFjord, a gallery and research unit dedicated to the sonic arts, Helen Frosi grew up climbing trees and wandering about in the rolling fields of Leicestershire; upturning stones, mimicking birdsong, and making nests in hay bales. Never losing her curiosity for places where the winds travel through, she continued her ecstatic wanderings in the big city she somehow found herself living. With camera, notebook, magnifying glass and sound recorder in hand she pulls on her well-worn boots and strides out into the world, come rain or shine. Here are some of her findings...

Liz Helman
London-based artist and independent curator Liz Helman works across different media, including sound, video, photography and painting. In her time-based media works she explores the psychological and emotional attachment to place and dwelling. Journeying between recollection and reality, she challenges format driven orthodoxies, fragmenting and layering images and sound to consider the experience of dislocation and displacement.

Tonight she will be screening a specially-made silent video piece, which has been soundtracked for the first time by the BTTEs.

Howard Jacques
Originator of the Bermuda Triangle radio programme on Resonance 104.4fm and former co-proprietor of the near-mythological These Records shop, Howard Jacques is primarily a musician and sound artist. He has played in bands such as Put Put, Proxy Music, Frank Bangay's Topsy Turvey Band and is currently playing as Zon On N, DPM357X, the Bermuda Triangle Test Engineers and the ex-Mad Family Band.

Initiating and co-curating the Lovely Audio Visual Extravaganza has led him to this very new venture into moving image. Tonight, witness the world premiere of Jacques' Brakhage-influenced video concrète, including Test Transmission I and Satellite Encounter.

Franziska Lantz
Global Warming, Audio Soil, DriftShift, motion picture, flashing moments, colour code, repetition, basic information, changing formation, rudimentary systems of communication.

Swiss artist, broadcaster and sometime Bermuda Triangle Test Transmission Broadcasts Engineer Franziska Lantz, has given us some beautiful things to project.

Bill Howard
Our guest Bermuda Triangle Test Transmissions Video Engineer tonight is artist, curator & film-maker Bill Howard. He is director at The Projection Gallery.com, co-director of The Lab Film Festival and friend of the Bermuda Triangle Test Transmission Broadcasts.

We're still looking for our guest Sound Engineer! Please contact us on testtransmissions@gmail.com if you're lovely enough...

DJs

Dave Ball
Electronic musician, producer, remixer & DJ, Dave Ball is known and loved as one half of legendary duo Soft Cell, for his solo work and his collaborations with Gavin Friday, Genesis P-Orridge, Virginia Astley & Richard Norris (The Grid). Tonight he will be spinning classic Northern Soul 7”s to dance to.

Art Terry
Los Angeles-born musician and broadcaster, Art Terry has hosted the wonderful IS BLACK MUSIC? radio programme since the early days of Resonance 104.4fm, featuring trippy Black artists that don’t fit into industry stereotypes. Dance with us wildly into the night...

Resonance FM Mission Statement

Imagine a radio station like no other. A radio station that makes public those artworks that have no place in traditional broadcasting. A radio station that is an archive of the new, the undiscovered, the forgotten, the impossible. That is an invisible gallery, a virtual arts centre whose location is at once local, global and timeless. And that is itself a work of art. Imagine a radio station that responds rapidly to new initiatives, has time to draw breath and reflect. A laboratory for experimentation, that by virtue of its uniqueness brings into being a new audience of listeners and creators. All this and more, Resonance104.4fm aims to make London’s airwaves available to the widest possible range of practitioners of contemporary art.

Resonance104.4fm is the world’s first radio art station, established by London Musicians’ Collective. It started broadcasting on May 1st 2002. Its brief? To provide a radical alternative to the universal formulae of mainstream broadcasting. Resonance 104.4fm features programmes made by musicians, artists and critics who represent the diversity of London’s arts scenes, with regular weekly contributions from nearly two hundred musicians, artists, thinkers, critics, activists and instigators; plus numerous unique broadcasts by artists on the weekday Clear Spot.

An Appeal To Listeners....

...of Bermuda Triangle Test Transmission Broadcasts/Resonancefm

Dear friends of Bermuda Triangle Test Transmission Broadcasts
Resonance is currently trying to raise money to bolster its imminent application to Arts Council England. To this end, the radio station wants to build reserves - savings which indicate its financial resilience and which it can draw upon in exceptional circumstances.
If you enjoy Bermuda Triangle Test Transmission Broadcasts please help us by donating to Resonance today. You can do this here on our website:

http://resonancefm.com/support
or here (via Just Giving):
http://www.justgiving.com/londonmc

And if you are a UK tax payer you can add value to your donation to our registered charity (number 290236) through GiftAid. All it takes is fifty listeners of Bermuda Triangle Test Transmission Broadcasts donating £10 each for us to reach this year's target.
Please mention Bermuda Triangle Test Transmission Broadcasts in your communication.

Resonance does not own a building, so has few material assets; nor does it charge for its service, so it very much relies on the generosity of you, its listeners. Please take a moment to show your appreciation of our broadcasts and secure the stations future. Thank You!

Yours

Howard Jacques, Bermuda Triangle Test Transmission Broadcasts
